To book the hall contact Pete or Sharon at St.Lawrence Post Office 852260.

Our village-hall is 110 years old, built originally as a school. A successful application to the Millenium Lottery Fund meant that a grant was made available for restoration to take place in line with current health and safety regulations.

The Griffiths-Holbrook annexe, opening to the rear garden, was added for meetings for up to 15 people. A well-appointed kitchen can cater for 50 people with a total seating for 80. There is a stage with good access, modern lighting and sound systems. So the hall is an excellent venue for classes, meetings, receptions, exhibitions, functions, parties, dances, concerts etc.

A newly installed eco-friendly heating system keeps the whole building comfortably warm.  The hiring fees are reasonable in line with other facilities in the area, to book the hall contact Pete or Sharon  at St.Lawrence Post Office 852260.

Village Hall News

St Lawrence Village Hall News – June 2014

The past year has been busy at the Village Hall. There have been several large projects completed, and some are still on-going.

Following last year’s AGM eleven windows were replaced at the Hall as condensation had built up between the double glazing panels. Following this the outside window frames were re-varnished as well as the front door and railings, leading up the path. The windows have been fitted with fire-proofed blackout blinds and the curtains are due to be cleaned and reproofed in the near future. Some attention was given also to the notice board at the gate as it had suffered over the very wet winter.

In January the hall floor was sanded down and re-varnished.  This has made the hall much lighter and we hope more welcoming for those who use the hall.

Work was started last year, to improve the garden at the rear of the hall. However   the continual winter rain meant that progress was slow and intermittent. It is still ‘work in progress’.

Following the AGM on the 27th May, Terry Gibbs was elected as a new member of the trustees and Carol Wigmore as a representative member from the Dance group.

It is with regret that Bruce Souter-Smith has had to permanently cancel his Pilates sessions at the hall because of ill health. His sessions have always been well attended and it will be a great loss for the hall.

9/8/13 - Village Hall News Summer 2013

At the meeting of the Trustees Management  Committee in May, Jill Fothergill asked to stand down as Chairman. Jill is hoping to spend more time with her family as well as her many other commitments on the Island. She has agreed to retain trustee membership for the time being in a more minor role. The trustees thanked her for all her hard work, commitment and enduring enthusiasm during her time as Chairman. Doreen Hippsley was duly elected as Chairman, and Rita Wills in now Vice-Chairman.

The Undercliff Singers are having a summer break,so there will no meetings through August. The next rehearsals will be at St.Catherine's church, Ventnor on Tuesday evenings at 7.30p.m from September 11th. and no longer at St.Lawrence village-hall. The choir has been very busy in the last two months, raising over £1800 for various charities. New singers are always welcome,no need to read music, just enjoy singing all sorts of music.
Tenors and basses would be particularly welcome to sing with this friendly and enthusiastic group. Please contact Bridget Garton or Doreen Hippsley for any information.
The Community Association organized a splendid Jubilee celebration at the village-hall which was very popular and the Binnel Bay beach-clean on Saturday July 21st. with a barbecue.
The annual St.Lawrence well-dressing begins on Monday July 23rd. from 10a.m to continue through the week at Lisle Combe (the Garage). The placing of the tableau and the blessing at the well is on Saturday morning July 28th. Jill Fothergill on 730979 welcomes any helpers to this interesting and sociable fun project.

The funeral of our popular and well-known ex-councillor 'Buster' Bartlett took place at the Parish church when tributes were paid to his many years of dedication to St.Lawrence and Ventnor. His good humour is much missed.

It is with regret and sadness that from September the Undercliff Singers will be moving from the Village Hall to St Catherine’s Church to meet and rehearse on Tuesday evenings. This is due to the infirmity of some members of the choir who are having significant difficulty accessing the steep pathway to the Hall. Thanks are given to the Trustees for providing the excellent facilities within the Hall.

The Undercliff Singers will be giving their final performance before the summer break at Wroxall Methodist Church on the 13th July at 7pm. Everyone is welcome. Entrance is free, but there will be a retiring collection.

The Undercliff Singers were delighted to be asked to perform at the Arts Festival in Ventnor in April with two Male Voice choirs,Newchurch and Hart from Odiham in Hampshire and Aled Jones.Michele Brock conducted the choir which was very well received. The Singers will be performing in June and July in Newport,Ventnor and Wroxall.New singers are always welcome-contact Bridget Garton or  Doreen Hippsley or go along to the village-hall at 7.30p.m on a Tuesday evening. The choice of music is eclectic, from Bach to Bernstein;there is no need to have to read music just enjoy singing.
There is a lot of talent in our village which was apparent at the hall at an exhibition, organised by the Community Association.Paintings, photographs, crafts of all kinds were on view and were much admired.

The St Lawrence Community Association, Village Hall Management and Churches are inviting you to our local celebrations. So, why not join other residents and come to the Big Jubilee Picnic Lunch at the Village Hall on June 3rd - 12 noon to 2pm. Bring along your picnic and a rug to sit on.
