Your Church in your Village

The Parish of St Lawrence holds regular services throughout the month mainly in the beautiful Parish Church (2nd,3rd and 4th Sundays at 11am) and the Old 12th century  Church ( 1st Sunday at 5.30pm).

A small but enthusiastic congregation attend the services and all contribute to the various roles that are needed to maintain two lovely buildings. Flower arranging, sides person, lesson reading, cleaning, cake making etc.

Throughout the week we receive many visitors who comment in our Visitors  books how much they love the peace and tranquility. We provide light refreshments especially for hikers and walkers who use the coastal path.  The parish church has recently started to rearrange the space provided and we have set up a new lending library and seating so people can sit and read a book or just take a rest. This free facility enables you to borrow books for as long as you need and all we ask is that you return them when read!

Throughout the year we run a monthly coffee morning ( 1st Wednesday 10.30-12) and a light lunch ( 3rd Wednesday 12-2) at the village hall provided by a small group of church volunteers. This year we have raised money for local causes totaling £1,103 in 6 months.

So when was the last time you stepped inside our churches in the village? Do you know the story of our famous pre-Raphaelite windows and our link with the national chest hospital that stood on the site of the Botanic gardens in Ventnor?

Maybe you could offer help to keep these historic resources running?

If you are new to the village it is a great way to meet people and get to know what is going on in your village.

Easter walk

Easter week in St Lawrence started with a Benefice service at Whitwell church followed by a special service in the parish church at St Lawrence on Maundy Thursday when we celebrated the Last Supper.  The sun shone on Good Friday and the first Good Friday walk took place starting at St Lawrence church walking along the cliff path to intone and after a brief lunch stop on to Whitwell for a short service of contemplation.  Easter Sunday service celebrated the risen christ with a good number in the Parish church including a couple of children on holiday with their parents and grandparents.

Church Roof Fund Kicks Off
Woolverton House Church Roof Fund
Woolverton House Church Roof Fund

St Lawrence Parish church is renowned for its historic church windows and visited by numerous people during the year for this reason.

Sadly the church roof is now in need of serious repair so a fund raising event took place on St Georges day  at Woolverton House by kind invitation of Sam Twining.

People enjoyed walking round the 6 acre garden full of spring flowers and blossom and ate homemade cake with twining tea! The sum of £1,835.58 was raised on the day.

Thank you to all who came too support this event on behalf of the Parochial church council .
